Studying music makes your brain more efficient, study reveals

http://www.classicfm.com/music-news/studying-music-makes-you-smarter/

According to a new study, musicians and people who are bilingual have trained their brains into being more efficient.
Researchers at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute found musicians and bilingual people used fewer brain resources when carrying out a memory test.
The study, published in the journal Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, found that people with a musical and bilingual background activated different parts of their brain and showed less brain activity while carrying out a task than people who hadn’t had formal music training.
Music lessons make children smarter, new study reveals
Author Dr Claude Alain, a senior scientist at Baycrest’s Rotman Research Institute and a professor at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Medical Science, said: “These findings show that musicians and bilinguals require less effort to perform the same task, which could also protect them against cognitive decline and delay the onset of dementia.
“Our results also demonstrated that a person’s experiences, whether it’s learning how to play a musical instrument or another language, can shape how the brain functions and which networks are used.”
Studies have previously shown that musicians and bilingual people have a better working memory, ability to remember things like a phone number or instructions, and are better at mental arithmetic – but scientists haven’t yet been able to work out why.
In the study, researchers analysed the brains of 41 people aged 19-35. They fell into three categories: English-speaking non-musicians, musicians who only speak English and bilingual people who don’t play a musical instrument.

The participants were asked to identify whether a sound from a musical instrument, the environment or a human was the same, and whether it came from the same direction, as the previous one they heard.
While they identified the sounds, each participant’s brain imagery was analysed.
Musicians remembered the type of sound faster, while both bilinguals and musicians identified its location more accurately than the other group.
Bilinguals performed the same in the first test as those who only spoke one language, but they still showed less brain activity when completing the task.
Dr Alain concluded: “People who speak two languages may take longer to process sounds since the information is run through two language libraries rather than just one.
“During this task, the brains of bilinguals showed greater signs of activation in areas that are known for speech comprehension, supporting this theory.”

from solo to ensemble and choir

So here how from one soloist to ensemble and choir things set!
All comes from italian language where vocal music traditionally
used to have a special place :

1 - solo
2 - duet
3 - trio
4 - quartet
5 - quintet
6 -  sextet
7 - septet
8 - octet

Till 8 performers they still call it vocal or choral ensemble (group).
If at least two performers present every choir part, then there starts a CHOIR.
The traditional names for choir parts are:

  • Soprano
  • Alto
  • Tenor
  • Bass

Soprano and Alto parts set for woman voices, Tenor and Bass for men. Although there are exceptions, let's talk later about them. Each part can also divide into 2: In big mixed choirs we
can see Soprano I and Soprano II, etc for each part.
But in reality choirs and groups are very different, depending of the music genres that they make, for example: chamber, jazz, baroque, folk, gospel etc. There is also some history has been where the vocal genres have been forming.  Also different types of choirs in different times were a part of church, theatre, could carry entertaining function too. Also they can vary according to participants: mixed choirs, woman's choirs, men's choirs, children choirs, and even more.

Here comes the video showing how choir parts appear in the music score.
Each one is placed here on separate stave, plus you can also see the piano part under all of them.

Bobby again

The possibilities of the human voice in the nowadays world can be really boundless. We are surrounded by a wide variety of vocal techniques, styles and sounds. Each artist represents own sound individuality and experiments in this field are just welcome. Therefore, it became possible to develop your voice in many different directions. You even can try to sing with just your own voice, without embellishment: if you manage to capture the audience's attention and find own "color", tell your story, create convincing musical image, then you may will be even considered as a professional in this field. But now is a little exercise from greatest vocalist-innovator of today - Booby McFerrin!

One man is a vocal band

Now I urgently switch off classical themes and
tune to other fields of  VOCARTS, as I feel i have stuck there, but our place was not there.
What do we listen tonight?
This will be the example in between solo singing to a vocalbands direction.  Yeah, Bobby McFerrin! This man sounds like any man or any instrument, or all of them together. In any style actually he can do. Very good always to listen and realize where you belong.

Style is... (short and funny version)

Lately we were observing the materials about style and genre lately.
You certainly know all about it.
Genre is what has came from music history : it is all about form of music and it's aim.

Style is the bunch of music expressions (harmony, melody, rythm etc.), which definite the image and idea of music.

But both music terms are much wider than this simple explanation.
Wink me if we need to talk about it more.

Till that time : "one girl in many genres"

But here comes the styles review! See the difference!

Из рая в ад in one step (rus+eng)

                ENGLISH VERSION
                     (scroll down) >

That you would not think that this boring blog sinks in the depths of the classical vocal art history, we are going to make this great stride to a  newer planes. Yesterday we visited the rock concert of the Finnish rock band Battle Beast and the impression of that was not worse than from some opera revelations. The energy of soloist literally blows out from the very start. I would not even call this "singing",  more like artistic "screaming". The music was very well performed, although songs sounded to me quite common in the realm of heavy metal music.  As I do not have a chance to see these kind of concerts very often, I tried to capture a moment of transmission of old vocal music genres to nowdays rock. It seemed that in the atmosphere of medieval, such vocals could be percieved just like opera of underworld's theatre. Soloist is deserving best compliments for her incredible performance (thumb up!) But up there is a video, there you can judge yourself!

music of heaven

Now goes something to bless all this thing.
Nothing comes to mind, only this.
Perfect music by perfect choir in perfect day.
To me nothing can be better than this
in the field of singing.
Sound of heaven.
